The island of Corfu is located just off the West coast of Greece. Corfu enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate along with excellent beaches making it a popular destination for holidaymakers.
It lies as little as one and a half miles off the west coast of Albania, and is the northern most of the Ionian Islands. Twenty miles across and forty miles long, the north of the island is dominated by the impressive Mount Pantocrator. The centre is flat with a bleak plane and the remains of evaporated salt lakes.
Corfu is very green compared to other Greek islands with hot and dry summers along with winter rain that creates lush vegetation, which is dominated by over 2 million olive trees.
The east and northeast have a plentiful supply of tourist resorts, all within easy reach of the airport near Corfu town. From pebbly little coves through to sandy bays, the island is said to have some of the best beaches in the Ionian. The bigger modern resorts with their friendly tavernas have a terrific array of water sports, but you can also find some hyperactive discos, music bars and nightspots.
Local Food
As with all the most popular European destinations, you will find a massive amount of British type bars, pubs and tavernas, serving regular helpings of the sort of food you could find in any seaside resort back home. All meals come with chips, if that’s how you like it, but if you look around, there are Chinese, Italian and French restaurants to try too.
If it's the more traditional style your looking for, grilled or fried Chicken, Lamb, Squid and Octopus can be enjoyed with fantastic salads sprinkled in Olive oil. Mezedes(a combination of local dishes), Souvlaki( kebabs), Stifado( local stew) and Fish are dishes found throughout the resort in good psarotaverna (fish restaurants) and are well worth trying. Most restaurants provide a great choice of beers, wines and spirits but expect to pay more for the imported ones. Greece's favourite alcoholic drink is 'ouzo', which is made from pressed grape skins, herbs and berries. It is At nearly 50 per cent alcohol, and with a strong aniseed flavour, take sparingly best drunk straight and sipped slowly. Corfu's most famous wine is the expensive and elusive Theotoki Roppa. Retsina is a good standby. This is resinated wine, common throughout Greece, and is an acquired taste.
